The Future of the Planning Profession 2020
Professor Gavin Parker, Dr Matt Wargent and Dr Emma Street organised and ran a high profile roundtable webinar entitled ‘The Future of the Planning Profession 2020’ as part of the UK-Ireland Planning Research Conference 2020 on 7th September. The webinar attracted well over 200 registered participants from all sectors: practitioners, professional bodies and academics.
Chaired by Gavin Parker (University of Reading) the speakers were: Paul Willmott (Managing Director, Planning, RPS), Finn Williams (Public Practice), Ben Clifford (University College London), Sue Manns (President, Royal Town Planning Institute) and Emma Street (University of Reading).
The discussions were lively and the chat room was buzzing with questions and contributory points. Much of which inevitably focussed on the implications of the planning white paper reforms for England and the likely effect on future skills and role within the planning profession, as well as considering how to deliver high quality outcomes.
The event followed on from a day symposium on the same topic held in September 2019 at the University of Reading. Stemming from that event and informing this year’s discussions are a selection of short, accessible interface essays which were published in Planning Theory & Practice here with many of the contributions coming from REP staff.
