Pathways to Property - Annual Summer School held virtually for 2020

Pathways to Property aims to introduce young people across the UK to the wide range of careers in the property industry and is run by the Reading Real Estate Foundation (RREF). It is one of the largest widening access to property programmes in the UK, reaching thousands of young people per year through school visits, online courses and the Summer School.

The eighth annual Pathways to Property Summer School took place from 20-22 July 2020 and for the very first time the event was held online. We were joined by 97 students from Year 12 who took part in taster lectures, virtual site visits, careers advice, university life sessions and a final group project. Through these activities they not only learnt more about the property industry and the careers within it, they also got the opportunity to develop key skills such as confidence, resilience, team work, time management and presentation skills.

The week ended with a series of group presentations to over 40 members of the industry. The quality was fantastic, with participants rising to the challenge and delivering exceptionally well prepared presentations. Each group was asked a series of questions by members of the industry, giving them to opportunity to showcase their knowledge in a new and exciting way and pushing them to strengthen their confidence and delivery.

83% confirmed they are considering a career in property after attending the Summer School

99% of participants said the Summer School met or exceeded expectations.

“Despite the current situation of covid, the course was extremely well organised, informative and interactive. Before going into this I had no idea whatsoever that real estate could be studied at University or taken as an apprenticeship but coming out the other end I am definitely considering it for further study!”

We look forward to continuing to work with the Summer School participants over the coming academic year, offering them opportunities to take part in a work experience placement, an e-mentoring programme and supporting them as they enter their final year of school or college. We hope many will have been inspired to pursue a career in property.
