Navigating Transitions: The Case for Personal Leadership in Uncertain Times

By Dr Tatiana Rowson and Dr Kelly Sloan

When we read the news today, it is clear that we live in a world that is increasingly complex, unpredictable, and fast moving. From economic disruptions to the rise of artificial intelligence, shifting social norms, and demographic fluctuations, the pace of change can feel relentless. In times like these, personal transitions—whether entering midlife, changing careers, or rethinking our purpose—can feel even more daunting. The external world is in flux, and internally, we often find ourselves questioning: Where do I go from here? What do I need to thrive in this next phase? This is where personal leadership becomes essential.

We define personal leadership as ‘the ability to change and adapt ourselves and our lives in response to new aspirations and realities. Personal leadership is a process, rather than a state. It involves self-awareness, contextual awareness, experimentation and reflection’. Unlike traditional leadership, which focuses on guiding teams or organisations, personal leadership is about guiding yourself. It’s about developing the mindset, adaptability, and self-awareness to navigate personal change with confidence and clarity. Whether we are stepping into a new phase of life or responding to unexpected challenges, our ability to lead ourselves determines how we experience and shape the future. When everything around us is shifting, the ability to anchor ourselves in our values, strengths, and growth mindset is what allows us to thrive.

The external environment is not the only aspect of our lives that requires personal leadership. Today, we live longer and often healthier than ever before and this means that our midlife is more meaningful and opens up an array of possibilities around work, retirement and life. But to make the most of this new reality, we need to prepare ourselves by making smart personal  leadership decisions. At the most basic level, we are the leaders of our own selves. We cannot predict the future and cannot control many of the things which happen to us, but we can make decisions that allow us to be prepared, to be resilient, and to protect our well-being so that we can lead longer, healthier working lives.

In the past 18 months we have been working on our Sustainable Personal Leadership model as a map to recalibrate our futures. We combined our passion for adult development and lifelong learning with our experience in fostering experimentation, curiosity and self-reflection to empower our CEO of Self. Inc. Very much in the spirit of Henley programmes, we bring together the latest research in a relatable and actionable way.
