RREF Supporter Focus: Nigel Bennett
Nigel Bennet is a Reading alumnus, class of 1989, a Major Donor and supporter of RREF. After graduation, he spent some time at King & Co, now JLL, before taking time out for a year-long voyage in the Middle East and Africa. This journey gave him the time to consider life from different perspectives, returning with the full determination to contribute to the sector. In 2000, Nigel started Bennett Real Estate Consultancy, providing advisory services to select corporate clients on real estate investment in the UK retail and investment markets.
We approached Nigel for his take on how the industry is changing and his relationship with RREF.
Reflecting on his early career, Nigel noted how the sector has evolved: “The industry has transformed with significant changes over the years. It has moved from “suits, ties and Abacus” to a more contemporary environment of “business casual & spreadsheets.” He then added the following advice to those now entering the industry: “Hard work, common sense, and communication is key; ensure that you are open, honest and transparent. The property industry is simple; my advice is to specialise as quickly as you can.”
Commenting then on his support for RREF, Nigel told us “It is an opportunity to reward the institution which had partnered with one in developing the skills for a successful career. The work of RREF in supporting students is essential and contributing to its work is a way to support those with whom I have a shared journey and education. I would like to see the organisation continuing to support students and the education of future property students in the style of the USA Model of Philanthropy and Giving.” To this end, Nigel would like to encourage others to support RREF: “The Foundation should aim to increase the annual donations from corporate and individual benefactors to expand its reach.”
Finally, looking ahead at the opportunities and challenges for the real estate industry, Nigel told us: “The market moves too fast to predict. No one predicted pandemics nor war in Europe. The key is to develop the ability to adapt and pivot swiftly”.
