Henley Alumni Stories - stories from our community

Andreas Krebs, a Henley MBA Alum who graduated in 2006 reflects on his career journey and how Henley helped shape him be prepared for an ever changing world.

It has now been two decades since I graduated from Henley Business School. So much has happened in that time… Almost every continent has experienced war, expulsion and displacement. Every continent, like all of us, has faced major economic crises in its own way. A pandemic turned all our lives upside down from one day to the next. And yet, we still had to forge our own career paths. I was fortunate enough to be part of setting up a company and was able to build an asset management business from the ground up. All of this in different countries and different languages. Fifteen years later, we sold our company; it became part of a much larger group, with the brand we had created becoming that of the acquiring company. And then? I set out for new horizons once more and am building up a business again.

This time for J. Stern & Co. in Germany, whose roots stretch back 221 years to Frankfurt in the early 19th century and the decision to return was taken some 85 years after the banking business was forcefully closed. When it comes to the professional challenges much remains the same, and yet one stands in awe of such a family and corporate history.

Why am I mentioning geopolitical developments over the two decades since I left Henley Business School? Why do I mention that my career path has taken me to different countries, different cultures and different languages? Henley played a key role in preparing me for this. Henley gave me the tools to make decisions even in uncertain times, to analyse many different scenarios clearly and, on that basis, to take bold entrepreneurial decisions.

What is one piece of advice you would share with a current student at Henley to inspire them in their career journey?

As described, we are living in times of geopolitical uncertainty. However, we are also living in times of major technological upheaval. We do not yet know to what extent, for example, artificial intelligence will change all our lives, both personally and professionally.

My advice to current and future Henley students is not to let this daunt you, but to focus on what you have learnt, to consciously identify your own strengths, to engage in constant dialogue with lecturers and fellow students (even every day after graduation), and to learn from their experiences and their history. This diversity is a great treasure. It will give you the confidence to master any challenge and set sail for new horizons with confidence.
