Yazan Hamdan, an MSc International Business graduate of Henley Business School and current CEO of Reflect, shares an inspiring story of leadership, resilience, and the lasting impact of his Henley experience.

Today, I serve as the Head/ CEO of Reflect; a regional digital bank within the Arab Bank PLC group, leading the growth of a digital-first bank operating across multiple markets. My role involves driving strategy, innovation, customer experience, product development, and regional expansion in an industry that is rapidly evolving and increasingly interconnected. Looking back, my time at Henley Business School was one of the most transformative periods of my life, both professionally and personally.

Academically, the MSc in International Business provided me with a strong foundation in strategy, leadership, international markets, and organizational management. The program challenged me to think beyond local perspectives and develop a broader understanding of how businesses operate and grow across borders. Those lessons continue to shape my approach today. The ability to navigate complex business environments, understand different market dynamics, and lead through change are all skills that I continue to draw upon in my current role.

Looking back, many of the strategic decisions I make today are influenced by the frameworks, discussions, and perspectives I gained during my time at Henley. Moreover, one of the most valuable aspects of the experience was the opportunity to study alongside talented professionals from diverse nationalities, cultures, and industries. The classroom brought together perspectives from around the world, enriching every discussion and challenging us to think differently. Many of the friendships and professional relationships I built during that time have endured to this day, and I remain connected with classmates who continue to inspire me through their achievements and experiences across different parts of the world. However, what makes my experience at Henley truly memorable goes beyond the classroom.

During my studies, I experienced the loss of my mother—a profoundly difficult moment in my life. Balancing personal grief with academic commitments was one of the greatest challenges I have faced. What I remember most is the understanding, compassion, and support I received from the Henley community. The encouragement from faculty, staff & classmates allowed me to navigate that difficult period without losing sight of my goals. Their empathy reminded me that education is not only about academic achievement but also about the people who help you persevere through life’s most challenging moments. Completing my degree under those circumstances became more than an academic accomplishment; it became a testament to resilience, supported by a community that genuinely cared about its students.

Today, as I lead a regional digital bank and work to expand access to innovative financial services across the region, I look back on my time at Henley with deep gratitude. The school not only helped develop my professional capabilities but also supported me through a defining personal chapter. Equally important, is the global network of remarkable individuals whose friendships and perspectives continue to enrich both my professional and personal life. For all of this, I will always be thankful.

What is one piece of advice you would share with a current student at Henley to inspire them in their career journey?

My advice to current and future students is to embrace every aspect of the experience, both inside and outside the classroom. The academic knowledge is important, but some of the most valuable lessons come from engaging with people who have different backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. Build relationships, challenge your assumptions, and remain curious. Also, remember that your journey will not always be linear. There will be personal and professional challenges along the way, some of which you cannot anticipate. During difficult times, don’t hesitate to lean on your support network and trust in your ability to persevere. Resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to keep moving forward are often just as important as academic achievement.
