Real Estate & Planning Department News

MSc Real Estate/MSc Real Estate Finance Manchester Field Trip

Over 140 students from the department’s postgraduate programmes in Real Estate and Real Estate Finance recently participated in a three-day field trip to Manchester (October 31st to November 2nd). The group was hosted by the Manchester offices of CBRE and Savills and Manchester based investor-developer Burntwood. Students visited a range of projects including NOMA, Circle Square, Spinningfields/St Johns, Deansgate Square, Salford Quays/Media City and the Trafford Centre. The objective of the field trip program was to enhance the student’s commercial awareness and thus contribute to their wider personal and professional development.

Rural Field Trip to Yattendon

Students from the MSc Real Estate were recently offered the opportunity for a tour of Yattendon Estate in West Berkshire, kindly hosted by the Managing Director, James Hole, and the Land Agent, Aisling O’Donovan.

Many of the students were not familiar with rural land management and were surprised to see that the Estate, amounting to around 9500 acres, is actually a very diverse portfolio of assets. Although the majority of land is farmed in hand and around 25% of the Estate is mixed commercial woodland, the Estate also includes a large portfolio of residential property, including more or less the whole of Yattendon Village, and workspaces for a growing number of businesses with over 300 employees. Yattendon is one of the largest producers of Christmas trees in the UK and also owns two pubs, a farm shop, Yattendon Village Stores and Renegade Brewery, occupying a site converted from a dairy unit.

American Real Estate Society Inaugural Program Leadership Conference

Professor Eamonn D’Arcy and Associate Professor Jorn Van de Wetering participated in the Inaugural Program Leadership Conference of the American Real Estate Society (ARES), November 10th-11th hosted by the Knauss School of Business, University of San Diego. This inaugural event attracted representatives from a total of 48 real estate programmes. Reading was the only European Program represented. Over the two days participants focused their discussions on the infrastructure which supports successful real estate centres and programmes.  They shared experiences on topics such as engaging industry in curriculum design, benchmarking program outcomes and visibility, program and centre mission statements, effective fundraising, leveraging inputs from professional associations,  effective engagement with alumni and corporate donors, student recruitment and support, career services and effective career coaching. Professor D’Arcy was an invited panellist on the panel which focused on ‘Positioning real estate centres and programs for long-term success’.

Professor D’Arcy has served on the board of ARES since 2014 and participated in the ARES strategic retreat on the future direction of the society which followed the conference on November 12th
